The Smurfs originated as a comic strip by Belgian cartoonist Peyo. The comic strip first appearead in a sports magazine in 1958.

In the 1980s Hanna-Barbara created a children's cartoon based on the comic strip where these little blue characters learned lessons, helped their neighbors and spent an awful lot of time keeping away from the villain of the show, Gargemel, and Azrael (his cat).

Meet the Smurfs:

• Papa Smurf - He was the leader/father figure, wore red clothes instead of white, and had a white beard.
• Smurfette - The only female smurf (at least until the child smurf Sassette shows up), wore a white dress and white high heels. Many of the smurfs were after her attentions!
• Hefty Smurf - The strong smurf, has a heart & arrow tattoo, and likes lifting weights.
• Handy Smurf - The carpenter smurf, wore white overalls, billed smurf hat, and a pencil over his ear.
• Brainy Smurf - The know-it-all smurf who got it wrong a lot of the time, thrown out on his head a lot...
• Jokey Smurf - Loved practical jokes, especially gifts that blew up!
• Clumsy Smurf - Well, the name says it all, but he is a nice guy who means well, sometimes Brainy takes advantage of him though.
• Chef Smurf - Likes to bake, in charge of meals for the Smurfs celebrations. And he loves to eat :)
• Vanity Smurf - Well, he's vain! Carries around a mirror, wears a flower over his ear.
• Harmony Smurf - The musician of the bunch, who loves to play the trumpet, but he isn't very good at it...
• Baby Smurf - A baby smurf :) Cared for by Papa Smurf.
• Grandpa Smurf - The oldest smurf, returned after 500 years, wears yellow overalls, yellow hat, walks with a cane.
• Lazy Smurf - Lazy, skirts chores, sleeps a lot.
• Clockwork Smurf & Smurfette - Handy's robot creations.
• Tailor Smurf - The clothing guru.
• Grouchy Smurf - He's grouchy :p Always frowning, etc.
• Dreamy Smurf - Daydreamer.
• Greedy Smurf - Always after the sweets.
• Scaredy Smurf - The cowardly one.
• Painter Smurf - A fabulous artist with a french accent, ususally wears a red painter's jacket with a black tie.
• Poet Smurf - The poet.
• Sloppy Smurf - A dirty little fellow, who loves, well, dirt!
• Nat Smurfling - One of the child smurflings, wears green overalls, no shoes, talks to animals.
• Snappy Smurfling - One of the child smurflings, wears a yellow tshirt with a storm cloud.
• Slouchy Smurfling - One of the child smurflings, wears a red tshirt and a loose fitting hat, not very enthusiastic over things...
• Sassette Smurfling - One of the child smurflings, wears pink overalls, has red hair worn in pigtails, has freckles.
• Other Smurfs - Farmer, Alchemist, Timid aka Actor, Architect, Baker, Dabbler, Doctor, Dopey, Enamored, Finance, Flying, King, Mango, Miner, Nanny, Nosy, Reflection, Reporter, Sneezy, Stinky, Sweepy, Weakling, Wild, Weepy, Tuffy, Wooley, Spy, Nurse, Lucky, Lumberjack, Pretentious, Pastrycook, Cook, Submariner, NAvigator, Fisher, Hunter, Marco (most of these smurfs only appeared in the comics)

Meet the Villains:

• Gargamel - Sorceror, obsessed with catching smurfs for use in his potions.
• Azrael - Gargamel's cat, also obsessed with catching smurfs.
• Hogatha - An ugly witch, wears a wig, thinks she's beautiful, but of course she isn't, causes trouble for The Smurfs.
• Balthazar - Gargamel's godfather, lives in a large castle, and is a more power sorcerer.
• Other Villains - Bigmouth, Chlorhydris, Nemesis, Scruple, Wartmongers, Rogue & Witlor

Friends of the Smurfs:

• Johan & Peewit - Human/Dwarf friends of the Smurfs, pageboy/squire to the king.
• Feathers - Loyal stork, friend to the Smurfs, provides transportation.
• Father Time - In charge of time, wears white robes, long beard.
• Mother Nature - In charge of nature's course, a good friend to the Smurfs.
• Other friends - Homnibus, Pixies, King Gerard, Princess Savina, Dame Barbara, Puppy, Smoogle, Laconia, Woody, Marina, Denisa.
